About us
Who we are
Gorrell Street Neighborhood Association was co-founded by Deena Hayes Greene and Monica Walker, with John Greene serving as the president. Located in the heart of Southeast Greensboro, our association is deeply rooted in the streets of Gorrell, Martin, Murrow blvd, Medley, Plott, Watson, and Macon. Our leadership is committed to revitalizing these historic areas, bringing back investment where it’s been long overdue, and ensuring that our community thrives.
Our Purpose
We are dedicated to investing in areas where America has divested. We aim to ensure every resident is proud of where they live. We champion the cause of creating fair and just communities, advocating for equality and community welfare. Our initiatives include hosting vibrant community events such as cookouts, street parties, house revitalizing as well as porch revitalizing, fostering residents’ unity and pride.
Our Origins
The seeds for the Gorrell Street Neighborhood Association were planted in the late ’90s when Deena and her husband moved to 454 Gorrell Street—a house rich in history and narratives of resilience. This home’s historical significance is highlighted by its previous owner, William Windsor, who faced numerous trials in owning and maintaining this property.
Our Evolution
Since its inception, the association has successfully revitalized over 30 houses, significantly increasing home occupancy rates and enhancing property and neighborhood values. Our work has transformed the landscape and lives of many, weaving a fabric of resilience and community pride.

Community Engagement
Beyond events, we actively engage with our neighbors through various initiatives designed to promote community spirit and address local needs. Every first Tuesday of August, we participate in National Night Out, a nationwide event that brings together neighbors and law enforcement to promote safety and neighborhood unity. Our block parties are legendary, allowing everyone to connect and celebrate our shared community spirit.
