National Night Out

National Night Out is an annual community-building event across the U.S. aimed at promoting partnerships between law enforcement and neighborhoods to enhance safety. However, Gorrell Street Neighborhood Association has put a unique twist on this event by focusing on community strength and unity, without involving police enforcement. This shift was inspired by Liberal Night Out, which reimagines safety as being about community access to resources like healthcare, secure housing, and education, rather than fear of crime and punishment. This change reflects the community’s values of equity and opportunity.

Neighborhood Clean-up

The Clean the Neighborhood event is a weekly initiative where residents come together to keep the community clean and well-maintained. Each week, residents take on tasks such as mowing grass, dusting off spiderwebs, pulling weeds, and caring for the neighborhood’s flowers. This effort ensures public spaces stay tidy and inviting. Cleaning supplies are provided, and residents of all ages participate. After the work is done, the event typically concludes with refreshments and a chance for everyone to socialize.

Monthly Neighborhood Coalition Meetings

Every third Saturday of the month, Gorrell Street Neighborhood Association meets with other neighborhood associations to discuss various issues within the communities. This gathering provides an opportunity for residents and association leaders to share concerns, explore solutions, and collaborate on addressing common neighborhood challenges. These discussions help ensure that every association is heard and that issues like infrastructure, safety, and development are addressed collectively, fostering a stronger sense of unity among neighboring communities.
